Rolly Romero won a unanimous decision against Ryan Garcia in the main event of a highly anticipated boxing card that ultimately didn’t live up to expectations. The judges scored the fight 115-112 (x2) and 118-109, all for Romero.
The turning point in the fight came in the second round, when Romero landed a huge knockdown that sent Garcia to the canvas. Garcia managed to get back up but seemed to lose some of his aggression as the fight continued.
Garcia showed good work with his jab in the middle rounds, so much so that I scored the fight in his favor 114-113. However, Romero’s aggressive style made a strong impression on the judges, and even though Garcia out-landed him in total punches and jabs, it wasn’t enough to secure the win.
After the decision was read, Garcia remained respectful, applauding Romero’s performance and offering no excuses. This loss puts him in a tough spot alongside his promoter Turki Alalshikh.
Devin Haney Defeats Jose Ramirez
Devin Haney won his fight against Jose Ramirez by unanimous decision (118-109 x2, 118-110). The fight started slow, but around the fifth round, Haney found his rhythm and controlled the match.
Ramirez struggled to keep up with Haney’s speed and defense. The fight wasn’t exciting, but Haney showed he can dominate when needed. Haney will need a better performance if he plans to challenge Garcia, Lopez, and other top boxers.
Teofimo Lopez Dominates Arnold Barboza
Teofimo Lopez won a unanimous decision against Arnold Barboza (116-112 x2, 118-110). Lopez was faster, had better footwork, and landed more impactful punches.
The most entertaining part of the fight was the 12th round, but even that lacked excitement. Barboza seemed hesitant after realizing he was outmatched. Lopez is now a free agent, which opens up opportunities for him to sign with a new team or go independent. Barboza will need to bounce back from this disappointing loss.
Reito Tsutsumi Wins Against Levale Whittington
Reito Tsutsumi defeated Levale Whittington by unanimous decision (60-54 x2, 58-56). Tsutsumi showed flashes of real talent, even though Whittington made it a tougher fight than expected. Tsutsumi’s punches had real power, and he’s one to watch in the future.
Ryan Garcia vs. Rolly Romero – What’s at Stake
If Garcia, Haney, and Lopez all win their upcoming matches, they could end up fighting each other. Garcia vs. Haney is expected to be a big rematch later this year, and Lopez could be next in line for the winner.
Garcia’s return to the ring is highly anticipated, as he’s coming off a drug suspension after his victory over Haney was overturned to a no contest. This loss to Romero complicates his path to future big fights.
